FROM GOODREADS:
A MAN CONTROLLED BY HIS DESIRES . . . Infamous for his wild, sensual needs, Lazarus Huntington, Lord Caire, is searching for a savage killer in St. Giles, London's most notorious slum. Widowed Temperance Dews knows St. Giles like the back of her hand-she's spent a lifetime caring for its inhabitants at the foundling home her family established. Now that home is at risk . . .

A WOMAN HAUNTED BY HER PAST . . .Caire makes a simple offer-in return for Temperance's help navigating the perilous alleys of St. Giles, he will introduce her to London's high society so that she can find a benefactor for the home. But Temperance may not be the innocent she seems, and what begins as cold calculation soon falls prey to a passion that neither can control-one that may well destroy them both.

A BARGAIN NEITHER COULD REFUSE

MY TAKE:   I had heard a lot of good things about this book before I had a chance to read it myself. I am happy to say that I wasn't disappointed. The story had much to offer the reader who craves romance, mystery, history, suspense, and crime solving!

I enjoyed the surprises that the author threw in at various points in the book. Just when you thought you had figured out who the mysterious Ghost of St Giles is, she gives you a complete U-turn to navigate. Several other things pop up during the course of the story that will make you glad that this is just the first in the series.  You're left wanting more!

Ms. Hoyt is quite adept at building her characters along with their own story from the beginning. You find yourself immersed in the book, rooting for Temperance and Lazarus to figure everything out before they run out of time.

I was impressed that the author veered from the norm and set this particular story in the slums and showed a seedier side of London.  So many of the historical fiction/romance books I've read lately tend to stay in the "safer" settings of the aristocracy and their manor houses.

Because she's introduced us to some very interesting characters in this book, I'm really looking forward to the other books in this new Maiden Lane Series. I was especially thrilled to find that one of my favorites: Lady Hero Batten, would be starring in the next installment ~ Notorious Pleasures; due out in February 2011!

  1. It sure doesn't look like your average romance novel, but then it sounds darker too
